Writing Activities

Unscramble

1. The teacher prepares slips of paper with vocabulary words scrambled at the top.
2. The teacher hands the slips of paper to each team face down.
3. The teacher says “1,2,3, go!” and the students work as a team to unscramble the vocabulary word.
4. As each team unscrambles the vocabulary word they race their paper to the teacher to see if they are correct. The first team earns 4 points, the second 3, and so on.

Hangman

1. The teacher draws a stand for each team and spaces for each letter of a vocabulary word.
2. The first team guesses a letter.
3. If the word does not include the letter, the teacher draws a body part and writes that letter beneath the word.
4. If the word includes the letter, the teacher fills in that space and gives the team a point.
5. The teacher asks the students what the word is and how to spell it.
6. If a team receives all of the body parts, deduct one point then give them a new stand.

Gap Fills

1. The teacher prepares slips of paper with spaces for each letter of the vocabulary word. Then, adds a few letters to help students.
2. The teacher hands the slips of paper to each team face down.
3. The teacher says “1,2,3, go!” and the students work as a team to fill in the gaps.
4. As each team fills in the gaps they race their paper to the teacher to see if it is correct. The first team earns 4 points, the second 3, and so on…

Whisper Race (Writing)

1. The teacher whispers a vocabulary word to two students.
2. The students run to their partners, who are waiting across the room from the whiteboard, and whisper the word.
3. Their partners run to the board and race to write the vocabulary word correctly, earning a point for their team.
